In England, Scotland and Wales, unions are calling for a widespread railway workers' strike. This should take place on June 21, 23 and 25, 2022 and include all professional groups. The employee representatives want to literally paralyze the route network.
According to a statement from the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, employees from a total of 13 railway companies will participate: Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, Cross Country Trains, Greater Anglia, LNER, East Midlands Railway, c2c, Great Western Railway, Hull Trains, London Underground (21 June), Northern Trains, South Eastern Railway, South Western Railway, TransPennine Express and West Midlands Trains. The network operator Network Rail is also said to be on strike.
The train drivers' union Aslef is also calling for work cancellations on June 23, 2022 at Greater Anglia, on June 26, 2022 at Hulltraining and on June 28 and 29 and July 13 and 14 at Croydon Tramlink. Workers at GTR, which operates the Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express trains, have opted for action that goes beyond a strike, such as refusing to work overtime. And Island Line on the Isle of Wight voted against any action.
As airport feeders may also be affected, UK travelers planning to travel by public transport should keep an eye on the situation surrounding the strikes. In most cases there are alternatives such as long-distance buses, at least for shuttle traffic to the airports.
