Beverages in hand luggage are strictly prohibited on flights. At the latest at the security checkpoint, passengers must therefore separate themselves from the liquids they have brought with them. Passengers at Dortmund Airport have the opportunity to do something good and donate their returnable bottles. Recently, the proceeds have benefited refugees from Ukraine.

There are large boxes in the terminal on the Departures level. Travelers can throw their empties into these. The proceeds will be donated to a charitable institution - since 2020 to the Johanniter-Hilfsgemeinschaft Dortmund. In the past, for example, raised beds and communication aids for nursing and retirement homes were purchased from the donations. Last year, the bottle collection raised more than 5.400 euros. Everything for a good cause - only transport costs and 10 percent for the organization that takes care of collecting and redeeming the deposit are deducted.

Against the background of the war in Ukraine, Johanniter and Dortmund Airport have now decided to use the proceeds from March to December 2022 to support refugees from Ukraine.

“Staying by and listening was not an option. That's why we brought relief supplies to Poland in March and are collecting donations under the keyword Ukraine Aid in order to buy urgently needed donations in kind. We are pleased to be able to use the proceeds from the returnable bottles for this good cause together with the airport," says Hildebrand von Hundt, board member of the Johanniter-Hilfsgemeinschaft Dortmund.

Airport Managing Director Ludger van Bebber is happy about the support: "We are happy to be able to support refugees in this extremely difficult situation together with the Johanniter. Last year around 95.000 passengers used the connections to Lviv, Kyiv and Kharkiv from Dortmund. It is incomprehensible to us that many of these people are now confronted with the unimaginable suffering of forced war.”
