The government of Ukraine has placed the Motor Sich Group, including its subsidiary Motor Sich Airlines, under war economy control. The head of the company, who was accused of collaborating with Russia, was dismissed a few weeks ago. He faces charges of alleged high treason.

Motor Sich is a major manufacturer of engines and other components. The group is now under the control of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal's official statement, this means that all company assets are considered military property. At the same time, however, they promise that after the end of the war the company will be returned to its owners or that any loss in value will be compensated.

Ukraine has not yet provided any further information on what the Ministry of Defense intends to do with the seizure of the Motor Sich group. It was only said that the company was needed in order to be able to cover the "urgent need for armaments". This indicates that a fundamental change in production is imminent.

It remains to be seen to what extent Ukraine will actually be able to implement a war economy production of armaments by Motor Sich. The largest production facilities are located around the embattled city of Zaporizhia. The group's own airline Motor Sich Airlines was mainly active in domestic traffic before the war. The provider was also considered a "vintage airline" in aviation circles due to the use of aged aircraft such as the Antonov An-24.
