Many Germans seem to rely more on cash when on vacation. This is the conclusion of a survey that was carried out on behalf of the German credit institute Postbank. It is noteworthy that younger travelers prefer coins and bills to debit and credit cards.
With the help of a survey, the subsidiary of Deutsche Bank found that 72,7 percent of Germans prefer paying with cash when they are on vacation. Most of them take the notes and coins from Germany with them. The aim is to reduce the dependency on local ATMs.
Welt am Sonntag quotes from the Postbank survey that the percentage of cash used during vacation has increased by 6,7 percentage points to 43,4 percent compared to the previous year. In the under 40 age group, the proportion is just under 60 percent.
When asked why, many said they thought cash was particularly safe when traveling. Only 26,6 percent of those surveyed rated ATM cards as secure. Credit cards are trusted by only 25,4 percent.
The reason is that many Germans consider cash to be the safest form of travel payment. 40,7 percent say that. Payment by giro card, on the other hand, is only considered secure for 26,6 percent, and use by credit card for 25,4 percent. Nevertheless, the proportion of people who have made at least one payment with their debit card at their holiday destination has risen by almost ten percent to 57,8 percent.
At Postbank, you see the fact that many Germans take their vacation fund in cash with them, quite critical. It is pointed out that it cannot be replaced in case of theft or loss and in some places it would be known among criminals that Germans like to have large sums of cash with them. Postbank therefore recommends a good mix of cash and cards. Please note that debit and credit cards can be blocked with a quick phone call in the event of loss or theft.
