The US airport Newark has officially opened the new Terminal A. This has a floor space of over one million square meters and cost around 2,7 billion US dollars. Such a high sum has never been invested in a single terminal building before.
The predecessor from the 1970s was showing its age and was considered technically outdated. Some time ago, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey decided to construct a new building. This has 33 gates and 60 areas for shops. Annual capacity is around 13,6 million passengers. In addition to the new terminal, the $3,3 billion Newark Liberty redevelopment program also includes a $400 million integrated public parking garage with a new central car rental facility and $175 million for paving the southern airfield.
Inspirational public art greets travelers as they make their way through the new terminal. 29 local artists will showcase their work with unique art installations that support the Port Authority's vision of transforming the customer experience and conveying a distinctive New Jersey feel. Complementing the immersive arts program is a digital journey created by multimedia studio Moment Factory, showcasing the Garden State's iconic landmarks, artworks and innovations through a series of large-scale, permanent multimedia installations.
In the first phase, 21 gates will be used by Air Canada, American Airlines, Jetblue and United Airlines; the remaining 12 piers are scheduled to open later this year. Additionally, in the second phase, Delta Air Lines will relocate its operations.
