The British airline Virgin Atlantic filed for bankruptcy protection proceedings under Chapter 15 of local bankruptcy law in the United States of America. According to the carrier's declaration, this should enable the carrier to be restructured. No government aid has been received from the UK.
The Chapter 15 proceedings applied for are a special feature of US bankruptcy law. This is explicitly reserved for foreign companies and is intended to protect them from lawsuits from US creditors. This does not get rid of any debts, because a recovery plan has to be presented and implemented. In US law, maintaining the company and especially the jobs are in the foreground, if possible.
