Glasgow Airport had to be evacuated on Monday 5th December 2022. The security service had found a "suspicious object" during a tour and immediately alerted the police.
The incident happened in the early hours of the morning, which are quite busy at this airport. Scottish police arrived at the site of the "suspect object" at 6am local time, officials said. The precautionary evacuation of the terminal was ordered.
As a result, flight operations came to a temporary standstill. Passengers were instructed to wait in an airport car park for further instructions. The travelers had to spend a few hours there, because the all-clear could not be given until around 12:30 p.m. local time.
The executive called in Royal Navy explosives experts who carefully examined the unspecified item. Then the all-clear could be given. A spokesman for the Royal Navy told the BBC that the suspicion had not been confirmed. It would have been a completely harmless object. It was probably accidentally forgotten by a passenger or he lost it unnoticed.
"Police have been called to a report of a suspicious item in Glasgow Airport's security search lounge. As a precaution and in accordance with procedures, the check-in area and security search hall have been closed to the public and a cordon has been put in place," a spokesman for the Ordnance Disposal Service said.
Since the passengers had to wait in the parking lot when the temperatures were quite cool, the airport staff distributed blankets and warm tea to freezing travelers. After the police clearance, flight operations could be resumed. According to Glasgow Airport, three connections had to be diverted to other airports and a total of 22 flights had to be canceled without replacement.
