The Czech airport Brno has so far got through the year better than last year. Around 176.000 passengers were counted in Hochsimmer. The bottom line, however, will be a loss of five to ten million Czech crowns (around 196.632 to 393.265 euros).

The regional airport was able to benefit from the fact that DHL opened a freight connection to Leipzig / Halle. There were already cargo routes from Brno before, but this airport has so far not played a major role in international logistics. They now want to change that and thus strengthen the second mainstay - in addition to passenger flights. A first, but important, step was taken with the DHL route.

In total, over 176.000 passengers used seasonal flights, three times as many as in the previous year, but we are only 44 percent of the record season 2019. We estimate the number of passengers handled in 2021 at less than 190.000. The unstable and unpredictable situation in the aviation market remains, but together with the city and the region we are trying to do our best to bring some new regular flights to Brno again. Unfortunately, this is not entirely up to us now, and the airlines themselves are more cautious than ever. More flights are taking place, but the market situation is still critical due to developments and restrictions in the world. A great enrichment for us in difficult times is the almost rocket-like start of the new DHL Express Cargo Line and the traditional TNT / FedEx, which ensure that we will handle over 12.500 tons of freight this year. That is an absolute season record and three times more than last year. Although transport for normal passengers is still our priority, in times of crisis it is the freight that adequately supplements it, ”explains airport manager Milan Kratina.

Luděk Drnec, CEO of DHL Express (Czech Republic) adds: “Every day a Boeing 757 from Leipzig lands on our scheduled flight in Brno, which means we have accelerated the processing of shipments in this region. Last year, we handled the historically highest shipment volume in this area. Due to the closure of the runway at Bratislava Airport, an Airbus A300 landed here in April this year, which was a great help for our international DHL logistics network ”.
