Without a fixed cost subsidy for employees and prospects for better working conditions, the industry will not be able to keep employees.
“The fourth wave of corona threatens the next wave of emigration of employees in the catering and hotel industries. The colleagues are afraid that they will lose their jobs in the next few weeks or that they will have to accept lower wages again and are looking for other options, ”warns Berend Tusch, chairman of the tourism department of the Vida union.
The trade unionist is irritated by the demands of employers in various media for financial support from the federal government, even if he shows understanding that the companies need planning security and it will probably not go without support if the guests are absent. "The worries and existential fears of the employees on the other hand have always been completely irrelevant to the government and the way it looks, nothing changes," says Tusch, referring to the fixed cost subsidy for employees that was requested in the spring, but still missing.
If the fixed cost subsidy does not come, the emigration of employees is inevitable. The tourism industry could not afford any further emigration of employees. “The companies have been complaining about too few staff for years and regularly demand the opening of the seasonal quota. The representatives of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce have never thought of improving working conditions and giving people prospects on the Austrian labor market, "said Tusch, emphasizing:" Our colleagues are hosts out of conviction, but a full-time job needs so much income make a good life possible. ”The labor market is also a market with supply and demand: if the supply is not right, there is also no demand. “Unfortunately, tourism has not offered an attractive working environment for years,” Tusch concludes.
