Terminals 2020, 1A and 1 in Vienna-Schwechat have been closed since mid-March 2. Only small sections of Terminal 1 are used for check-in, bus arrivals and “double bus boarding”. Airport boss Julian Jäger has now announced that Terminal 2 will be back into operation at the beginning of the summer timetable period 2022.
There have been no check-in counters in the oldest terminal building at Vienna Airport for a long time. In the course of renovations, Terminal 2 was extensively refurbished and houses the central security control for departures in areas B, C and D. On the ground floor, additional luggage belts were installed at the point where suitcases were handed out in the past. The construction work is finished, but due to the corona pandemic there has not yet been a restart.
In the course of the announcement of new gastro tenants, Julian Jäger said: "We are very pleased if Terminal 2022 is expected to go back into operation with the start of the summer flight schedule in 2". The airport is also announcing a “completely new travel experience”. In the course of the general renovation of this terminal building, it will also house lounges in addition to the central security check. Furthermore, the paths to gate areas B, C and D will in future be reminiscent of a shopping mall.
Flughafen Wien AG has so far made no statement as to whether the three zones mentioned will be reactivated in one fell swoop or whether they will be gradually brought back into operation. At the moment, all departures are carried out from areas F and G located in Terminal 3. Both non-Schengen and Schengen flights alternate between "double bus boarding". The passengers are brought to the C-bus gates assigned to Terminal 1 in a shuttle bus. The actual bus boarding then takes place there. However, access to Pier C is blocked. Due to construction work, the diagonally opposite B-bus gates are currently being used as a Temporary Nonschengen bus arrival.
