On Sunday, April 23, 2023, the Vienna City Marathon will take place again in the Austrian capital. For this reason, some streets will be temporarily closed. This also has an indirect effect on passengers at Vienna-Schwechat Airport, as some of the usual routes cannot be used temporarily.
According to the ÖAMTC, the following roads are free and can be used to travel to and from Austria's largest airport: The west entrance is free, so access to the airport from the west is via Hietzinger Kai, Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, Grüner Berg and Altmannsdorfer Straße to the tangent and East Autobahn (A4) possible. Coming from the south you can take the S1. From the districts 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, and 22 it goes over the North or Floridsdorfer bridge - A22 - A23. In the inner city, the ÖAMTC recommends the Handelskai as an alternative route.
Arlberg tunnel closed for a long time due to renovation
In the federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, drivers have to be prepared for longer journey times for around six months, because the Arlberg tunnel, which is subject to a toll, will be closed in both directions for around six months due to renovation work. The next construction work, including the closure, has already been announced for the coming year.
According to Asfinag, the structure, which is located on the S31 "Arlberg-Schnellstraße", cannot be used in either direction from April 24 to October 6, 2023 and from April 15 to November 22, 2024. Deviating is possible, but only via the Arlberg Pass, which means a much longer journey time.
Since the Arlberg expressway is often used by holidaymakers from Switzerland and Germany, they should find out about alternative routes in good time, because it is to be expected that the pass road could be overloaded at peak times. This could increase the travel time again. “Locals” should also choose alternative routes if necessary and possible.
