For a few days there has been speculation that Austrian Airlines will fleet four Boeing 787s, which were originally intended for Norwegian, in the coming year. These are said to be equipped with Rolls-Royce engines and Lufthansa acquired them cheaply. The AUA does not want to comment on this subject upon request.
The long-haul fleet of Austrian Airlines is getting on in years and comes at least partly from the former Lauda Air. There is always speculation about a possible renewal, but Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr imposes strict conditions on the Austrian subsidiary. As long as the financial goals are not met, there will be no new machines. Due to the corona pandemic, a lot has changed, because the fleet of the Kranich Group, including the AUA, has been significantly reduced. At the same time Lufthansa ordered some Boeing 787s, which could obviously be bought cheaply because they are machines that other airlines no longer wanted.
Speculations that four Boeing 787-9s could be there for Austrian Airlines are therefore quite obvious. But what does the AUA itself say? No comment. Do not participate in rumors or speculation. A clear and unambiguous denial looks different, so that the AUA opens up even more space for thought games.
