The Spanish airline Vueling has made extensive changes to its summer flight schedule and is cancelling over 40 connections. Airports in Germany and Switzerland are also affected. Passengers in Hamburg, Munich and Zurich in particular must prepare for cancellations.
As the aviation portal "Aeroroutes" reports, Vueling is discontinuing the route between Bilbao and Hamburg, which was only introduced in 2023. The connection between Mallorca and Munich will also no longer be offered next summer. Zurich Airport is particularly hard hit: several routes are being canceled, including flights to Alicante, Santiago de Compostela, Mallorca and Bilbao.
The decision is part of a large-scale adjustment of the Vueling route network. While more than 40 routes will disappear from the program, only four new connections will be added - including one to London Heathrow. However, there will be no new routes in German-speaking countries.
No official reasons for the deletions
Why Vueling is taking these drastic measures has not yet been officially announced. The cuts are surprising, however, as the airline only set a new record outside of peak season in winter with an average capacity occupancy of 91 percent.
Industry experts speculate that rising operating costs, changing demand or strategic realignments could play a role. The aviation industry continues to operate in a dynamic environment characterized by fluctuating kerosene prices, staff shortages and changing travel habits.
Impact on Passengers
For travelers who have already booked flights on the affected routes, the question now arises as to what alternatives are available. Vueling customers should find out about rebooking or refund options as early as possible. Business travelers and vacationers who rely on direct connections could be particularly negatively affected by the cancellations.
It remains to be seen whether Vueling will make further adjustments to its route network in the future or whether it will add individual routes back to the program at a later date.
