The German regional airport Weeze has been able to handle around 85 percent of the passenger volume it had before the corona pandemic so far this year. In 2019 there were 1.030.000 passengers. We are confident for 2023.

In Weeze, the use of the airport increased in two waves this year. First of all, in the spring, around Easter, there were significantly more travelers than in the previous months. During the 2023 summer holidays, there was a real rush to the range of flights. The regional airport on the Lower Rhine has managed the revival of holiday traffic without long waiting times, flight cancellations or significant delays, explains the operator.

“The teams at the airport have prepared well for the rapid return of passengers and the great demand in summer. So everything worked perfectly. We were particularly pleased about the good grades from our guests," says Managing Director Sebastian Papst.

Significantly more passengers are expected in Weeze in 2023. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that Ryanair is adding a Boeing 737 to its local base and is therefore also taking on more routes, and on the other hand, the Dutch travel group Sunweb is relocating numerous charter flights to the German regional airport. The background is that the air traffic tax is cheaper in Germany.

Low-cost airline Ryanair will be flying to Pula in Croatia for the first time, as well as to the Spanish mainland destinations of Asturias/Oviedo and Reus and Bergamo/Milan in Italy. The connections from Weeze to Agadir, Faro, Malaga, Trapani and Zadar will be increased by additional flight rotations. Four Boeing 737-800s will be stationed at the site.

The third largest tour operator in the Netherlands, the Sunweb Group, will also be involved at Weeze Airport for the first time next summer. The airline SkyExpress flies to four Greek islands – Kos, Rhodes, Crete and Zakynthos – exclusively on behalf of Sunweb. Sunexpress and Freebird Airlines fly to Antalya and Bodrum for the Dutch online provider in the high season. In addition, Tailwind Airlines flies to the Turkish Riviera for well-known German tour operators during high season. All flights can already be booked.

“Ryanair's cheap tickets are generally trendy. Passengers' desire for stress-free travel from a regional airport is also increasing. In Weeze, customers are now also offered an expanded holiday flight program with a total of five airlines. All in all, good conditions that the number of our passengers in the coming year will be well above the one million mark,” said Papst.
