Niederrhein Airport in Weeze was able to handle around 63.500 passengers during the NRW Easter holidays. At the same time, one benefits from the Dutch meivakanties, so that the first “high season” of 2022 has continued seamlessly.
The airport team and the authorities involved dealt with traffic peaks with around 5.000 passengers and 30 take-offs and landings per day without lengthy waiting times. Everything went smoothly in front of the check-in counters and at the security check, almost all Ryanair and Corendon Airlines flights took off on time.
During the two-week Easter holiday, the airport handled a total of 63.500 passengers. For comparison: In the pre-Corona year 2019 there were 74.100 travelers. The numbers fit the trend. Finally, the demand for holiday and private travel picked up again significantly in the spring. In April, for the first time since the pandemic, more than 100.000 passengers were counted in Weeze - an important mark.
Most recently, 40 percent of the passengers were of Dutch origin. The proportion is likely to remain high in the coming weeks. After all, the so-called Meivakanties in the neighboring country only end on May 15, and many Dutch people are still going on holiday trips these days. And the choice is large: the airlines at Weeze Airport are planning 80 departures to over 30 destinations every week during the current summer season.
The regional airport also had to accept a proverbial “reach in the toilet”. The domestic German connections to Heringsdorf, Sylt, Munich and Berlin announced by the ticket seller Green Airlines could not be included. After only a single Sylt flight, which was operated with a Cessna Caravan, was over. The ticket seller then went out of business.
