The private railway operator Westbahn will increase the frequencies between Vienna Westbahnhof and Salzburg Hauptbahnhof with effect from June 12, 2022. With the exception of three "gaps" you will then run every half hour.

According to the company, there are now up to 57 trips a day between the two cities. Since the beginning of April 2022, four course pairs have also been traveling to/from Munich Central Station with a stopover in Munich Ostbahnhof, where you can change to the S-Bahn to Franz-Josef-Strauß Airport. Stadler Kiss 3 multiple units manufactured in Altenrhein are used. These have three classes of transport and offer seats for 506 passengers.

“The following applies to every ticket valid on the Westbahn, including the KlimaTicket Ö: It entitles you to travel from the starting point to the destination. In principle, the right to a seat is not included. Travelers with a KlimaTicket Ö therefore value the advantage that they can also use the higher-quality Comfort Class on the Westbahn free of charge, given the significant increase in passenger numbers. Furthermore, they can make a free seat reservation for each trip, which enables more planning security in the run-up to the trip and a more relaxed trip,” says Managing Director Thomas Posch.

Of course, travelers without a KlimaTicket Ö can usually find a seat on the Westbahn. The travelers themselves can also make a significant contribution to this by not storing their luggage in the next seat, but under their own seat or in the storage space provided for this purpose, where it can also be secured against theft. If all of the leather seats are occasionally occupied, there is also a seat on the carpeted steps between the upper and lower deck. Even if the ride there is undoubtedly less comfortable than on one of the comfortable leather seats, it is probably still a better choice compared to having to get off the train with another provider due to overcrowding.

Westbahn wants cooperation with the ÖBB

Apart from the climate ticket, there is currently no mutual recognition of tickets for the Austrian Federal Railways and the Westbahn. This was the case between April 2020 and July 2021 due to an official emergency award. Westbahn Managing Director Florian Kazalek appeals to the competitor that you should sit down and find a common solution in the interests of the passengers.

"What was already possible without any problems during the joint Corona timetable of Westbahn and ÖBB between April 2020 and July 2021 must become a permanent feature in order to optimally utilize the overall capacity of the railway system. We have tried to talk about this several times over the past few years, but so far we have unfortunately not been heard. In view of the serious, long-term capacity bottlenecks, we appeal to those responsible to promptly accept Westbahn's still existing offer for mutual ticket recognition," said the manager.
