On Tuesday, passengers at Vienna-Schwechat Airport used the check-in counters in Terminal 1 for the first time after a long break. Security control and boarding will continue to take place in Terminal 3.

At the moment Terminal 1 is only in "partial operation", because the gate areas B, C and D remain temporarily closed. Also the new security check in Terminal 2 is not in use, at least for the time being. The last-mentioned area of the airport is only used on the landside as a connection to Terminal 3. Terminal 1 was temporarily closed in March 2020 due to low passenger numbers. At times the Pharmacy lonely the position in the orphaned check-in hall.

Terminal 1A, which was built as a temporary extension prior to the construction of the Skylink (T3), but which was more of a permanent solution, remains unused. When Flughafen Wien AG will reactivate the gate areas B, C and D assigned to Terminals 1 and 2 is still completely open. At least the bus arrival point of the old building is now being used. The travelers also pass through the new baggage hallin which, however, only immigration checks are carried out by the armed forces.

The following airlines carry out the check-in in Terminal 1:

  • Aeroflot
  • easyJet Europe
  • easyJet Switzerland
  • easyJet UK
  • Eurowings
  • Pegasus Airlines
  • Rossiya Russian Airlines
  • Ryanair
  • SunExpress
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Wizz Air

In T3 it is already tight and "clogged"

The capacity of Terminal 3 is severely limited, as in times of “party book managers” an out-of-date faulty design was achieved. Due to the fact that it is designed as a long, narrow “hose”, the structure quickly reaches the limits of its load capacity. Boarding larger machines can quickly lead to passengers having to queue at the main aisle and thus block the flow of passengers. Put simply: Terminal 3 can quickly become clogged and distances that are kept high during corona times can often not be maintained because there is not enough space due to the "hose architecture".

Since more and more passengers have been arriving at peak times since the beginning of June 2021, it is already often crowded and congested. It is therefore to be expected that Flughafen Wien AG will reactivate at least Schengen areas B and C in summer 2021 if the number of passengers continues to rise. There is no official confirmation for this yet, but preparations are already underway on the infrastructure.
