While retail and schools got through the lockdown last week, restaurants and hotels remain closed. The Viennese hotels fear a wave of bankruptcies.

"40 percent of the companies in Vienna are afraid that they will not survive the next six months", says Michaela Reitterer, President of the Austrian Hotel Association. After almost a year of the coronavirus crisis, the hotels lack planning security due to a lack of guests. For the industry there is little light at the end of the tunnel, and the government does not plan to take the first slow steps until Easter at the earliest. In addition, the cancellation of the Easter market at Schönbrunn Palace is causing problems.

"If the lockdown lasts until Easter, we have been without any significant income for over a year - the end of the flagpole will have been reached," said Katharina Kluss from the Hotel Donauwalzer on the Hernalser Gürtel ORF. Ten to twelve of the 80 rooms can be rented out daily, for example as home offices or to business travelers. At this level of utilization, however, there can be no talk of cost-covering. Everything points to a slow recovery, utilization at the pre-crisis level should only be available from 2024.
