After the Lufthansa Group, the Austrian mineral oil group has also signed a letter of intent with Ryanair for the delivery of around 160.000 tons of SAF fuel. This is to be delivered in Austria, Germany and Romania.
The low-cost airline describes the cooperation with OMV as "groundbreaking" and calculates that around 400.000 tons of carbon dioxide can be saved. This would equate to around 25.000 Ryanair flights between Dublin and Vienna. By 2030, the carrier intends to switch fueling to at least 12,5 percent SAF.
“We strive to reduce our own carbon footprint and help our customers reduce their emissions. This MOU is a great opportunity to accelerate the sustainability efforts of both companies. Sustainable aviation fuel significantly reduces CO2 emissions and we are happy to work with a strong partner like Ryanair and to offer solutions for the sustainable development of the aviation industry,” says Nina Marczell, OMV Vice President Aviation, Fuels Distributors & Public Sector.
Thomas Fowler, Director of Sustainability at Ryanair said: “SAF plays a key role in our Pathway to Net Zero decarbonization strategy, in which we have committed to increasing our use of SAF in the years to come – a commitment reflected by this agreement is being pushed further with OMV. OMV is a key partner for Ryanair in Austria, Germany and Romania and we look forward to expanding this partnership as Europe's largest airline."
