At the end of the month, the Ryanair Group, of which Lauda also belongs, will discontinue numerous routes from Vienna-Schwechat. The background is likely to be the extremely subdued demand due to the corona pandemic. Various travel restrictions, which can lead to people residing in Vienna or Austria not being able to enter the country at all, obviously have an additional negative effect on sales. Now destinations like Paris-BVA, Bordeaux and Gdansk are giving up.

In total, Ryanair will cancel 12 destinations from Vienna-Schwechat at the end of September. These are not only summer destinations that are being discontinued early, but city shuttle destinations are also affected. According to current information, nine more routes will be canceled at the end of October 2020. At the same time, however, one takes the Canaries back into the program. In general, the winter flight schedule from Vienna is very slimmed down and classics such as Marrakech and Agadir are completely missing. For other destinations, the admission appears extremely questionable due to tough entry and quarantine regulations and the associated quasi-zero demand.

Ryanair itself does not comment on the changes in the Vienna flight schedule, but these are not only visible on the Group's website, but affected passengers have already been informed of the cancellation of their bookings on a large scale by email. However, the Lauda parent company is not an isolated case, because the competitors Wizzair and Austrian Airlines have repeatedly adapted their flight plans in the last few days and weeks and adapted them to current demand. While the AUA makes no secret of the fact that the situation is currently challenging, questions about route settings seem to be undesirable at Wizzair.

Possible effects of the deletions on the staff of the subsidiary Laudamotion or the Maltese successor Lauda Europe Ltd. are currently not foreseeable. The company repeatedly tried to make unpaid vacations over the winter palatable in its cover letters. Unsurprisingly, the acceptance rate is "virtually zero". Laudamotion Managing Director Andreas Gruber, who works at Lauda Europe Ltd. does not appear in the commercial register as managing director, refuses any information about the future of the Ryanair subsidiary in Vienna.

Specifically, the following Ryanair routes from Vienna will be discontinued at the end of the month. It is not just about summer destinations, but also city routes such as Paris-BVA, Gdansk and Bordeaux hit the red pencil:

  • Varna
  • Bordeaux
  • Paris Beauvais
  • Kefalonia
  • Mykonos
  • Skiathos
  • Zakynthos
  • Alghero
  • Toast
  • Cagliari
  • Gdansk
  • Ibiza
  • Santander

At the end of October 2020, the following routes, mostly summer destinations, will be discontinued:

  • Burgas
  • Hercalion
  • Kalamata
  • Korfu
  • Kos
  • Chania
  • Rhodes
  • Santorini
  • Palermo

With the start of the winter flight schedule period, a few destinations are to be included. These include Shannon, although it seems questionable whether, in view of the currently extremely tough entry and quarantine regulations and the associated weak demand, the routes that are currently bookable will actually be added. In general, the winter destinations from Vienna are severely restricted this year. Classics such as the Canary Islands are on offer, but Marrakech and Agadir, for example, are missing.
