The Austrian Federal Railways are carrying out construction work on the S20 airport express line between September 2022, 8 and November 2022, 7. The section between Schwechat and Wolfsthal is affected in both directions, which will also affect the airport.

As a result of the work, some trains on the S7 rapid transit line will not run to Vienna-Schwechat Airport. From September 20, 2022, 23:55 p.m. to October 2, 2022, 23:59 p.m., individual trains will be canceled. According to ÖBB, from October 3, 2022 and November 8, 2022 between midnight and 4:20 a.m. most trains between Schwechat and Vienna Airport will be canceled. A rail replacement service with buses will be set up.

Persons who work at the airport or with an airline and travel to work by rapid transit, or passengers with early departures or late arrivals, should note that the rail replacement service will result in longer travel times. According to ÖBB, the buses will depart Vienna Airport around 16 minutes earlier than the rapid transit trains. The bus stop is not in front of Terminal 3, but at a marked point in the bus charter car park in front of Terminals 1/2.

In Schwechat, the rail replacement bus stop is right in front of the train station. The time between the arrival of the rapid transit trains and the departure of the buses is around two to five minutes. The ÖBB would like to point out that any connections cannot be guaranteed due to the rail replacement service in both directions.

During the period of construction work, there may also be a failure of rapid transit and regional express trains outside of the nightly "core time". It is therefore advisable to find out in good time before departure whether there is a train at the desired time.

“We ask our passengers to switch to the trains ahead or the next one. With the ÖBB Railjets you can still reach Vienna Airport comfortably and directly twice an hour via Wien Meidling and Wien Hauptbahnhof. Alternatively, connections with the City Airport Train (CAT) from/to Wien Mitte and the Vienna Airport Lines (VAL) are also available. A separate ticket is required for both,” says the Austrian Federal Railways.

During the construction work, ÖBB or VOR tickets will expressly not be recognized in the buses of the Vienna Airport Lines operated by Österreichische Postbus AG or in the trains of the City Airport Train. According to the Austrian Federal Railways, a separate ticket is required for the two means of transport mentioned.

Almost everywhere in the world, in the event of train cancellations and for whatever reason, rail tickets purchased are mutually recognized on the alternative means of transport, whether bus, cable car or ship (this is also only reasonable in the interest of public transport passengers), except in Vienna. Poor show, very poor show!

My flight was late so I had to rely on the rail replacement. I tried to find out where it departs from this article.
so I waited at the charter bus parking lot while the bus left the bus terminal…

We're sorry it came to this. We have received information from ÖBB that the replacement buses generally depart from the charter car park and that there should be a marked stop there.
