Vienna: Wizz Air cancels Amman and Akaba - AUA suspends three routes

The low-cost airline Wizz Air suffers a setback at Vienna-Schwechat Airport, because the brilliantly announced destinations Amman and Akaba will not be included for the time being. Most recently, these destinations were advertised in the single-digit euro range. The first flights should have taken place shortly before Christmas 2021.

“Before Corona”, Wizz Air was the only airline to offer non-stop flights between Vienna and Eilat (Israel), which is located directly next to Aqaba. Possibly due to Israel's restrictive corona entry rules, the decision was made this year to go to the Jordanian airport, which is within sight of the Eilat-Ramon airport.

Nothing will come of either the winter flights to the Bay of Aqaba or the Jordanian capital Amman. Wizz Air decided at very short notice not to operate the two routes in this winter flight schedule period 2021/22. All flights were canceled or taken off the market.

According to the current state of information, Wizz Air plans to offer the destination Amman from March 29, 2022 on Tuesday and Saturday from Vienna-Schwechat. For Akaba, however, there is still no new date for admission. If this route is still of interest to the carrier in the coming winter, it could be that it will not be offered until the winter flight schedule 2022/23. It can also not be ruled out that the flight to Eilat-Ramon could then be flown again. However, a lot of time will pass until then and further developments in the area of Corona are not foreseeable.

Wizz Air suspends Rome longer

The Wizz Air route between Vienna and Rome was also taken out of sale at short notice. This should be reactivated in the next few days, but it was decided at short notice to suspend it until March 1, 2022. The piquant thing, however, is that on December 10, 2021, particularly cheap tickets for 1,98 euros were sold on this route. These were available for the travel period from January to February 2022.

The competitor Ryanair wants to stick to the destinations Rome (CIA and FCO), Akaba and Amman. On the Jordan routes, there are particularly low ticket prices at short notice from 4,99 euros. This indicates that the Irish group could also struggle with the demand from Vienna-Schwechat on the two routes.

AUA suspends Leipzig / Nuremberg, Bologna and Zaporizhia

Austrian Airlines is temporarily suspending three more routes after Klagenfurt-Vienna. These are the triangle Nuremberg / Leipzig as well as Bologna and Zaporizhia (Ukraine).

The Lufthansa subsidiary's reservation system shows that the Leipzig and Nuremberg destinations will not be served between January 17, 2022 and February 27, 2022. For a long time, the two German cities have been served as part of triangular flights. Bologna was withdrawn from sale between January 10, 2022 and February 27, 2022.

Zaporizhia is the youngest destination that Austrian Airlines is heading to in Ukraine. In the course of ramping up the route network, the decision was made not to fly to the nearby Dnipro, but to this city. At the moment this route is mainly operated at night. The carrier will not sell any tickets between January 17, 2022 and March 6, 2022.
