The low-cost airline Wizzair was the airline that was the first to expand its service again at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. At the beginning there were setbacks due to the sometimes still existing official flight bans. Given the circumstances, the summer business was not that bad at all. But now Wizzair has to go back.

A look at the reservation system of the Hungarian carrier shows that the offer from Vienna had to be revised on a very large scale. The frequencies have in some cases been significantly thinned out and classic summer routes take the winter break earlier this year. Many routes have also been completely lost to many of the corona pandemic or are being discontinued due to low demand combined with strong competitive pressure. In 2019 and 2020, Wizzair and Ryanair in particular were looking for direct confrontation and “double” many routes.

For example, Wizzair will withdraw from the Vienna-Luqa route on September 26, 2020. This was actually one of the best routes from Austria, but the low demand and the competition from Air Malta and Ryanair may have had a massive negative impact on demand. But this is not an isolated case. It is to be expected that Wizzair and many other airlines will revise and adapt their plans for winter 2020/21 several times.
