The 2022 summer flight schedule of the low-cost airline Wizz Air will be significantly smaller at Vienna-Schwechat Airport than previously announced. The carrier confirmed to Aviation.Direct that it will withdraw two aircraft. The staff should be offered alternative jobs at other bases.
Shortly before Christmas 2021, it was announced that Wizz Air twelve flight destinations will be permanently deleted from Vienna-Schwechat. Further goals were secretly canceled, for example Milan-Malpensa. Aviation.Direct reported last Friday that the low-cost airline another 15 destinations from Vienna-Schwechat are cancelled. These include holiday destinations such as Palma de Mallorca, Rhodes and Heraklion.
Wizz Air no longer denies the fact that the presence at Vienna-Schwechat Airport is being significantly reduced. The base is reduced to four aircraft. Originally you had Six to seven machines are planned for the 2022 summer timetable. But nothing will come of it.
A company spokesperson told Aviation.Direct: “We are constantly evaluating the Wizz Air network to ensure our operations are in line with customer demand and remain commercially viable. The capacity will therefore be adjusted and four aircraft will be stationed at the Vienna base next summer. Two of the aircraft previously stationed at the Vienna base will be in use at other bases in the Wizz Air network next summer.”
The company did not answer the question of whether alternative destinations, i.e. "alternative routes" from Vienna-Schwechat, would be included in view of the repeated "string concerts". But they did talk about the flying personnel stationed in Austria. Due to the reduction in the number of aircraft stationed, the Wizz Air base in Vienna requires significantly fewer pilots and flight attendants. A spokeswoman explains their future as follows: "Our colleagues in the cabin and flight crew have already been informed in advance and have the opportunity to switch to other bases in the Wizz network."
It should be noted that the coverage of the canceled Wizz Air destinations from Vienna-Schwechat did not include the destinations in Ukraine. Due to the war instigated by Russia, it is currently not foreseeable when the routes can be served again. The number of 15 canceled routes is therefore exclusive of the Ukraine connections, which have to be suspended due to the war.
