The Hungarian low-cost airline Wizzair is increasingly relying on routes within Italy. A new base will open in Bari on December 20, 2020. For the time being an Airbus A321 will be stationed on site. The carrier is already present with 16 routes. Seven domestic routes are now to be added.
“Today's announcement underlines our commitment to Italy and the strength of Wizz Air's business model as we continue to expand our presence during this difficult time for the industry. The establishment of our third base in Italy with a state-of-the-art aircraft underlines the importance of the Italian market for our operations. We are delighted to launch new low-cost domestic Italian routes - three from Bari, three from Milan Malpensa and one connecting Verona and Catania. As we adhere to the highest standards of our hygiene protocols, we are confident that Wizz Air's attractive fares and great route network will make travel affordable for more and more passengers in Italy,” said George Michalopoulos, Chief Commercial Officer at Wizzair.
The low-cost airline has announced three new routes from Bari to Bologna, Turin and Verona, three new routes from Milan-Malpensa to Naples, Brindisi, Lamezia Terme and a new route from Catania to Verona. The frequency of the Bari-Milan Malpensa route will be increased from seven to eleven flights a week.
"Today's agreement with Wizz Air seals a collaboration that began in 2009 and developed in line with AdP's strategy of expanding markets, with particular reference to the emerging markets of Eastern Europe, as well as expanding the offer of some international and low-cost airlines. With this agreement, AdP and Wizz Air are also focusing on the domestic market, which is immediately the main driver of the hoped-for rapid recovery of air traffic. It is not just a question of opening or announcing a route; today Wizz is opening a base in Puglia and with it we will become even stronger partners, developing joint connections that see first Bari and later Brindisi as reference points for a joint growth of the network. The operational base in Puglia should not be a simple destination, but should be seen as a location that is part of a wider and therefore strategic industrial project. All this is being done to relaunch the dynamic of traffic growth at Puglia airports, already set out in the Strategic Plan. In addition, despite the current crisis situation, Wizz Air is strengthening and renewing its fleet with the new low-emission A321 Neo. This is in line with the objectives that AdP has set itself for environmental protection, as one of the few European airports to adhere to the UN Global Compact. The agreement with Wizz Air can help stimulate all operators in the Apulia area, public and private, to create, together with the airports, an ecosystem that will allow Apulia to continue to be a magnet for tourist flows, for industrial establishments, research and development and other opportunities," explains Tiziano Onesti, President of Apulia Airport (AdP).
