The Russian Federation's membership of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) was suspended following a vote by two-thirds of the participating states. The organization sees this as a reaction to the war of aggression against Ukraine.
Russia had already announced in advance that it would voluntarily withdraw from the UN special organization. Shortly after the military attack on Ukraine, the UNWTO announced that the Russian Federation's membership would be suspended. However, this required a vote.
159 countries are represented in the organization. A general assembly was held in Madrid, Spain on Wednesday. According to the UNWTO, two-thirds of the members voted to suspend the Russian Federation's membership. The representative of Russia did not take part in the voting.
