A busy summer in 2022 brought massive growth in all traffic areas at Munich Airport.

The number of passengers rose by 19 million compared to the previous year to a total of 31,6 million passengers. The airport has thus already achieved two thirds of its record result from the pre-crisis year 2019. The number of flight movements almost doubled compared to 2021 to over 285.000 take-offs and landings. The seat occupancy of the aircraft in Munich was the record value of 77,5 percent from 2018.

“The gradual lifting of travel restrictions has rekindled people's desire to travel. This has led to a significant increase in the number of flights offered by the airlines. The bookings received by the airlines indicate that traffic growth at the Munich location will continue in 2023," says Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen München GmbH.

After a weak first quarter, which was still marked by the pandemic, the demand for air travel increased enormously, according to the airport. While only four million passengers were counted at Munich Airport in the first three months, there were already over ten million passengers in the busiest third quarter. There was a backlog of demand for long-distance travel in particular: Since July, traffic between Munich and destinations in the USA has already been above the 2019 level. Since the winter flight schedule 2022/2023 came into effect, this has also applied to traffic to destinations in India, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand too.

Air freight also benefited from the traffic boom at Munich Airport. The volume of freight rose by 2022 percent in 55 to a total of around 259.000 tons.
