Berlin-Brandenburg Airport was able to count around 2021 million travelers in October 1,67. This is the highest value since the airport opened. However, it is well below the performance that Schönefeld and Tegel had in October 2019.
At that time, the two airports together counted 3,2 million passengers. If one compares the latest BER performance with that of September 2021, the new Berlin airport increased by around 210.000 passengers.
In the past few weeks, BER has repeatedly hit the negative headlines because the situation was chaotic in some cases. Most recently it became known that the drinking water can no longer be usedbecause bacteria were found. During the two-week autumn break in Berlin and Brandenburg in 2021, 960.000 passengers took off and landed at BER. The record was Friday, October 8th, with almost 68.000 travelers. A total of 7,7 million passengers have used BER so far this year.
Last month, 14.700 flight movements were also registered. There are now three long-haul connections from BER again. Qatar Airways offered non-stop connections to Doha during the corona pandemic. SmartLynx Airlines has been flying to Dubai for the tour operator FTI since October 4th. Scoot, the subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, resumed its non-stop flight to Singapore on October 20.
Last year around 9.000 aircraft took off and landed in Schönefeld or Tegel in October; in October 2019 there were almost 26.000 machines. In air freight, around 2021 tons of goods were handled in October 2.571, an increase of 788 tons compared to October 2020 and 560 tons less than in October 2019, the month before the crisis.
“The increased number of passengers last October shows that the desire to travel is increasing again. This does not only apply to European holiday destinations. Last month, more than 4.000 passengers used the long-haul connections from BER non-stop to Doha, Dubai and Singapore. This is a positive sign and speaks for a sustained recovery in air traffic, ”explains BER boss Aletta von Massenbach.
