The 2021/22 winter season went well for Innsbruck Airport.
Even if the number of passengers is still far below the pre-Corona level, the winter season, which ended at the end of the Easter holidays, sent a clearly positive signal towards recovery at Innsbruck Airport. 396.278 passengers were recorded by the end of April. This corresponds to 62 percent of the passenger numbers compared to the same period in 2019.
The year 2020, which was marked by significant declines in air traffic, was followed by a total failure for the airport of the 2020/21 winter season and, from an economic point of view, a more than sobering year as a whole. The 2021/2021 winter season was accordingly cautious and at the same time full of expectations. The relief was all the greater when the winter season slowly started in mid-December and finally picked up speed from February. In March 22 alone, around 2022 passengers were counted in scheduled and charter traffic, only 141.000 percent fewer than in the record year 30. Thanks to the late Easter date (mid-April), 2019 passengers were finally counted in scheduled and charter traffic by the end of April.
“We are satisfied and grateful that we have experienced an upswing in air traffic and that passenger numbers are recovering significantly. Our workforce made a significant contribution to the success of the winter season, showing great solidarity despite the existing challenges," says Airport Managing Director Marco Pernetta. “As far as the coming summer is concerned, we are also very positive. After the last two years, people are very keen to travel, most of them are longing for a carefree break,” Pernetta continues.
Pleasing reintroduction of the Frankfurt route and good prospects for the summer
An important impetus for the airport is the reintroduction of the daily Frankfurt route, according to the airport in a press release. Since May 2nd, the Italian airline Air Dolomiti has been operating the flight connection, which is so important for the Tyrolean economy, on behalf of the parent company Lufthansa. In particular, the end-of-day connection makes it possible to carry out appointments in all European centers on one day.
The summer season will start at the airport in a few days. The tour operators are very satisfied with the booking situation so far and therefore recommend not waiting too long to book. Demand is very high this summer, last-minute offers will be rare or even non-existent due to rising fuel prices.
