According to ARBÖ traffic experts, the traffic situation on the coming weekend will be largely influenced by the start of the semester break in Burgenland, Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol as well as the end of the holiday in Vienna, Lower Austria and Vorarlberg. In addition, the Opera Ball and the “Building and Living” trade fair in Salzburg, as well as the “moto Austria” in Wels bring additional traffic to the roads in Austria.

The well-deserved semester break begins next Saturday for students from Burgenland, Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol as well as the German states of Bavaria, Saarland, Saxony and Thuringia and parts of the Czech Republic. For their fellow sufferers from Lower Austria and Vienna as well as parts of the Czech Republic, it's time to go back to school from Monday. On Friday, longer delays will be expected around the state capitals and on their city exits. Graz in particular will be at the top of the traffic jam reports from the early afternoon with the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) and the Südautobahn (A2) as well as Conrad-von-Hötzendorf-Straße, Kärntner Straße, Merangasse and Plüddemanngasse.

The ARBÖ expects the main travel waves on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday there will be traffic jams specifically on the transit routes to the west and south. These are:

  • Arlberg Expressway (S16), between Bludenz and Landeck
  • Ennstal Straße (B320), in the greater Liezen area
  • Fernpass Straße (B179), throughout
  • Inntalautobahn (A12), in front of the Wiesing/Zillertal and Ötztal exits as well as in the greater Innsbruck area
  • Loferer Straße (B178), between the Steinpass and St. Johann/Tirol
  • Pinzgauer Straße (B311), in sections between Bischofshofen and Schwarzach
  • Pyhrnautobahn (A9), in front of the construction site area between Treglwang and Trieben, near Liezen and the Klaus tunnel chain
  • Tauernautobahn (A10), sections between Salzburg and Bischofshofen
  • Zillertal Straße (B169), throughout

“The traffic jams are expected to last from the mid-morning hours into the late afternoon. Block handling is associated with this. “The Brettfall tunnel on the B169, the Vils/Füssen border tunnel, the Lermooser tunnel on the B179, the Schönberg tunnel on the B311, the Klaus tunnel chain, the Bosruck tunnel and the Gleinalm tunnel on the A9 are particularly affected,” says the ARBÖ information service.

“On Sunday the wave of travel will shift from the west to the east. In the afternoon, travelers should plan a lot more time on the Eastern Motorway (A4) between Bruck an der Leitha and Vienna, the Southern Motorway (A2) from the Guntramsdorf junction towards Vienna and the Western Motorway (A1) from St. Pölten towards the federal capital. Patience and good nerves should also be present on Vienna's city highways and city entrances such as the Donauuferautobahn (A22), Südosttangente (A23), Altmannsdorfer Straße, Grünbergstraße, Triester Straße or Westeinfahrt, as the journey can take longer than usual," he said the ARBÖ information service.
