Austria's state capitals and the federal capital Vienna have largely left the consequences of the pandemic behind them. With 25,7 million overnight stays in 2023, they reached around 99% of their 2019 level. Their share of Austrian tourism as a whole corresponds again to the pre-pandemic level.

“The previous year was all about city tourism catching up. He found his way back to his long-standing role as a value creation engine, innovation driver and guarantor of year-round jobs," explains Vienna's tourism director Norbert Kettner in his role as chairman of ARGE Cities, the city tourism working group of the eight Austrian state capitals and the federal capital. Together they recorded 2023 overnight stays in 25.675.000. This means an increase of 27% compared to 2022. Compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019 - which counted 25.979.000 overnight stays - they were only around 2023% lower in 1.

In Austrian tourism as a whole, 2023 overnight stays were counted in 151.169.000. Austria without its capital cities achieved 125.494.000 overnight stays. The share of overnight stays in the capital city of the total Austrian volume was 17% - and was therefore exactly at the same level as in 2019. Two thirds (67%) of the overnight stays in the capital city in 2023 were counted in Vienna.
