Germany has abolished children's passports

The Federal Republic of Germany has abolished so-called children's passports effective January 1, 2024. Existing copies remain valid, but extensions and/or new issues are no longer possible.

Parents now have to apply for regular passports for their children, which are subject to higher fees, if they want to travel to countries for which the passport is necessary. If accepted, the child's ID card may be sufficient under certain circumstances, particularly within the EU.

Important: Regardless of the age of the offspring, they need their own passport and/or ID card. Simply presenting the parents' documents is not sufficient. It has also not been possible to have a child entered in one's own passport for many years.
