Inflation: ÖGB warns of unaffordable summer holidays

The Austrian Federation of Trade Unions warns that the ongoing increases in everyday costs in the Alpine republic could mean that many families will no longer be able to afford summer vacations.

This would not only be a significant disadvantage for many children, but tourist businesses, travel agencies and service providers could also feel the effects. “Carefree summer holidays with wonderful experiences for children or even vacation have become a wish for many families due to massive inflation. “The federal government is just watching here instead of finally intervening in prices so that parents can finally have more money in their wallets,” says ÖGB Vice President and Women’s Chairwoman Korinna Schumann

In addition to the financial burden on all-learning educators, many parents are already confronted with planning summer care. “It is clear that, above all, more money is needed for the communities to ensure childcare offers during the summer holidays. The municipalities must not be left alone,” said the trade unionist, who, in addition to affordable childcare, is calling for a legal right to at least three weeks of vacation during the summer holidays for parents with school-age children and a 6th week of vacation for everyone.
