Romania: Insolvent Blue Air has to pay back state aid

The EU Commission has declared state aid paid in the past to the insolvent low-cost airline Blue Air to be illegal. It was ordered that Romania must recover approximately 33,85 million euros plus interest.

However, it is extremely unlikely that any money will actually flow, as Blue Air stopped flying operations a long time ago is in bankruptcy proceedings. The EU Commission announced, among other things, that it considers the restructuring plan, which was intended to overcome the consequences of the corona pandemic, to be unrealistic. This is also supported by the fact that the carrier had to file for bankruptcy despite state aid.
