Vienna: Excursion tips for hot days

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Temperatures will rise again over the weekend. Drinking enough water and cooling off are particularly important on hot days. Around 1.300 drinking fountains in Vienna offer free refreshment on the go. During the holidays, the Wiener Wasser program offers many opportunities to cool off. An afternoon at the Wasserturm water playground in Favoriten or a hike along the water hiking trail are two special highlights for young and old to spend the summer refreshingly.

"The 150th anniversary of Wiener Wasser is a good opportunity to immerse yourself in the impressive history of water supply, preferably directly at the springs," says Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky. "Two museums in Lower Austria and Styria as well as the Viennese water trail are ideal for a weekend trip."

Walk along the water pipe

The most beautiful sections of the 10st high spring line can be explored on the water hiking trail. The path starts in Kaiserbrunn, in the middle of the impressive Höllental. There, the water pipe museum also offers a unique overview of the history of Vienna's water supply. The Kaiserbrunn spring is just a few steps from the museum. It is the historical origin of Vienna's water supply with spring water from the Alps. The refreshing atmosphere of the spring can be experienced up close as part of a guided tour. The museum is open from May to early November on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 16.30 a.m. to XNUMX p.m.

The water hiking trail consists of two routes, each of which is designed as a day tour. Part of the route is marked as an alpine climb and is therefore demanding. Further information on the museum and hiking trail is available at: wien.gv.at/wienwasser/bildung

Quench the thirst for knowledge

The HochQuellenWasser Museum in the Hochschwab region in Upper Styria also offers interesting facts about Viennese drinking water. Here visitors can learn everything about the construction and history of the II. Viennese mountain spring pipeline. In connection with a visit to the museum, the Kläfferquelle can be visited. It is the largest and most productive source in the source protection area of the II. Hochquelleleitung. Information on opening times and admission prices is available at wien.gv.at/wienwasser/bildung.

Water playground water tower

A varied meeting point is the Wasserturm water playground. There is a lot to discover for young and old on the 15.000 square meter site. A spring awaits, which springs from the source mountain and flows into the game water tower via a vine-covered aqueduct. This is a mini version of the nearby real water tower. In addition, a slide, two waterfalls and a raft ride across the lake ensure refreshing fun. For the adults there is a volleyball court and a table tennis table. Admission is free. The Vienna City Gardens lend parasols on site. Opening times and address are available at https://shorturl.at/lDFX3.

But not only the water playground itself is a summer highlight. The cultural summer in Vienna is a guest at the Wasserturm water playground until August 31st. A colorful program of music, readings, circus and dance awaits visitors - and admission is free.

On July 28 and August 25, the Children's University on Tour will stop at the Wasserturm water playground. From 15 p.m. to 18 p.m. there is a lot of interesting information for the little ones to learn about the refreshing water. The “Water.Fun.Tour” organized by Kinderfreunde Wien on August 12 and 19, from 14 to 17 p.m., will also be informative and entertaining. Active hands-on offers in the open station operation for children from 3 years and their parents convey fun, but also useful information about the topic of water using playful methods.

KarlsPLATSCH on August 11th

When the weather is nice, on Friday, August 11, 2023, the curtain goes up for refreshing coolness and delicious mountain spring water. In the Resselpark, Wiener Wasser is erecting a 3 by 4 meter water curtain right next to the mobile drinking fountain called Brunnhilde. There, the Viennese can quench their thirst at the FahrBar from 11 a.m. to 17 p.m. or cool off by jumping through the water curtain.

The Viennese can easily find everything they need to cool off on the digital city map in the City of Vienna app and at wien.gv.at/umwelt/cooleswien/.

Water summer special in the ZOOM children's museum

How does our drinking water cycle work? Children can discover the answer to this question in a playful way in the children's museum ZOOM. Not a drop of Vienna's mountain spring water is wasted, because the water that is pumped out of the bathtub with hoses and watering cans is collected and pumped to the first floor. From there it flows through the toilet flush into the Bassena or bubbles refreshingly out of the rain shower. The Water Summer Special was launched to mark the 150th anniversary of Wiener Wasser and draws attention to the fact that we all have to be careful with the vital resource of water.
