On the Italian island of Sicily, the Etna volcano is spitting again. As a result, Catania Airport had to be temporarily closed for security reasons. It is not yet clear how long the measure will last.

Etna is a comparatively extremely active volcano, which repeatedly causes restrictions in air traffic. Finally, lava flowed down the slope and at the same time it spat out a great cloud of ash. This is problematic for air traffic, which is why machines are rerouted over a large area. Etna is about 3.300 meters high. According to local media reports, the lava flow is said to have found its way to around 2.000 meters above sea level.

The authorities stress that the situation is under control and that there should be no danger to the population. Due to the ash cloud, it was decided to close the airspace and Catania airport for an indefinite period. In previous outbreaks, the measures usually only lasted a few days.
