Air Europa/IAG deal: Brussels could impose sensitive conditions

Although a deal between Air Europa owner Globalia and the International Airlines Group was set up on the second attempt, experts assume that the EU Commission will not wave it through without imposing conditions.

In February 2023, IAG announced that it would take over the remaining 80 percent of Air Europa at a price of EUR 400 million. However, the approval under competition law was still pending at this point in time. In the first attempt, which failed, the EU Commission considered the project ineligible for approval. Now it is primarily up to the IAG to make concessions that convince the competition authorities of the opposite.
