The subletting of council flats via Airbnb and other platforms is not permitted in Vienna. However, since 2012 the provider has not been able to completely prevent tenants from offering their apartments or rooms via the platform. Now you want to donate the income that you have achieved from the illegal rental.

The money that Airbnb has earned over the past eleven years from advertisements for municipal housing is to be donated in full to the Vienna relief organization. The Wiener Hilfswerk uses the Airbnb donation for projects in the homeless and refugee aid, where the money is primarily intended to help people in emergency situations. In addition, new social housing management projects are established and supported.

“We are very grateful for this generous donation, which – in keeping with Airbnb – will be used in the area of social housing. The Wiener Hilfswerk operates houses for formerly homeless people, and we also look after and support our clients on a mobile basis in apartments that we make available. The additional financial resources will also help us to start and promote new innovative projects for social housing," says Dir. Sabine lower, Managing Director of the Vienna relief organization.
