The Sita 2023 report published earlier this week shows that airlines and airports invested significantly more in their IT in 2023 than in the previous year.

The document estimates that airlines spent about $34,5 billion and airports $10,8 billion to modernize their IT infrastructure. Around two thirds of the responsible board members assume that these expenses will continue to rise.

Airports also increased their IT spending as a percentage of revenue in 2022 and 2023, while business benefited from a surge in travel demand - a sign of the critical role technology will play in the next generation of travel. Key investment priorities for aviation CIOs include biometric passenger registration, leveraging data to increase operational efficiency, and green solutions to optimize energy consumption and emissions.
