Azores Airlines wants to add Funchal-New York

The Portuguese Azores Airlines is about to start flights from Funchal to New York JFK. The Airbus A321neo machine type is to be used. It concerns charter flights on behalf of Inovtravel.

A total of 1 return flights are planned between November 2021, 21 and March 2022, 21. In the past, the carrier has repeatedly offered flights from Ponta Delgada to Canada and the United States of America. So far, however, it has not been possible to establish a permanent line offer.

The Azores are repeatedly brought into play as a kind of mini-hub for flights from Europe to the United States. Easyjet and Ryanair were said to have corresponding ambitions and the feasibility was repeatedly checked. However, both providers decided against this step and have no longer had any ambitions for long-haul routes for a long time.

Azores Airlines regularly offers connections to the United States of America from Funchal, Ponta Delgada and Terceira. The demand is also related to the fact that the US has a military presence in the Azores. In some cases, the entry formalities can be completed before departure, so that you can formally arrive in the United States as a domestic flight. However, this is not possible from all Azores airports.

Azores Airlines is currently planning to operate the charter flights from Ponta Delgada via Funchal. These are to be operated with the Airbus A321neo machine type. There are also non-stop flights from Ponta Delgada to Boston and Toronto. From Terceira, Boston and Toronto can also be found in the flight plan. The Airbus A321LR machine type is used on these routes.

Azores Airlines currently has a fleet of eight aircraft. There are three Airbus A320s, two A321neo, two A321LR and one A330-200. The sister company SATA Air Acores also operates two DHC Dash 8-200 and four DHC Dash 8-400.
