Basel: Tourism relies on the foodie trend

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Urban food courts, sustainable gastronomic concepts, cozy traditional bars and excellent gourmet restaurants - in Basel's restaurants you can enjoy culinary variety and top quality.

It shouldn’t just be delicious, but preferably regional and sustainable: More and more restaurants, including star cuisine, mainly use regional products and help to avoid food waste. The big stars of Michelin-starred cuisine such as Tanja Grandits (Restaurant Stucki), Pascal Steffen (Restaurant Roots) and Flavio Fermi (Restaurant Roots) and Flavio Fermi (Ackermannshof) prepare their gourmet menus with seasonal ingredients from the surrounding area and prove course for course that they have every Michelin star and GaultMillau deserve a point. In addition, with the Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl, Basel remains the only large city in Switzerland with a 3-star restaurant.

A meal in a cozy traditional Basel restaurant is simply part of a Basel trip. Swiss classics such as fondue, raclette and rösti are available in the Walliser Kanne or the Elsbethenstübli. But the local cuisine has even more to offer. Dine in an elegant ambience in one of the guild restaurants such as the Safranzunft or the Schlüsselzunft.

Due to its proximity to France, Basel gastronomy has always had an affinity with French bistro cuisine. You can eat like God in France in Basel institutions such as the Brasserie Volkshaus, the Restaurant Krafft or the Brasserie Au Violon.

Basel locals love their food courts! They like to spend their lunch break or Saturday evening in the Old Market Hall with its around 40 (!) food stalls or in the Klara in lively Kleinbasel.

Bars like Taverne Johann, Mat & Elly, UM Contemporary Restaurant or LAUCH bring fresh, new gastronomic concepts to Basel and thus consolidate Basel's position as a travel destination for food lovers. The latter in particular relies exclusively on vegetarian and vegan cuisine.

When the temperatures rise, things get almost Mediterranean on the sun-kissed Kleinbasel banks of the Rhine. People relax in the charming buvettes - the lovingly designed, small open-air restaurants - with a drink or an aperitif.

The self-guided FoodTour gives you the opportunity to explore places resp. to discover hip food concepts that normally only insiders know about.
