The capital city airport has been in financial difficulties not only since the beginning of the CoV pandemic. Airport boss Engelbert Lütke-Daldrup is therefore campaigning for partial debt relief.

FBB carries a burden of 4,5 billion as a result of the considerable planning and construction disaster. The airport will open on October 31, 2020 - nine years late. A company in such a situation is “actually overtaxed in terms of the capital market”, as Lütke-Daldrup now explained to the BER II investigative committee of the Berlin House of Representatives. "25 percent of our revenues go into repayment." A positive operating result could not be achieved either in or after the pandemic by one's own efforts.

Therefore, the BER boss goes on the offensive and brings a partial debt relief into play. Only in this way would black numbers remain realistic in the mid-2020s. The total amount that the owners would have to raise for this would be well below three billion euros. So far, the owners had rather opposed such a step. This controversial idea is supported by the SPD, among others new-deutschland.de. Their chairman in the committee, Jörg Stroedter, made it clear: "I am absolutely in favor of a partial debt discharge."
