It's just a matter of time: Flughafen Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH will take Terminal 5 offline shortly. If March was first targeted, the former capital city airport of the GDR could now be pulled the plug from February.

Since the opening of the BER Airport on October 31, 2020, the number of passengers has been limited. The pandemic is keeping the world - and especially the aviation industry - in suspense. And the numbers at BER are so bad that airport boss Engelbert Lütke-Daldrup brought into play a temporary closure of Terminal 5 as early as November. Aviation Direct reported. At that time, he was aiming for March 2021. "But it could be that the former Schönefeld Airport will be taken out of service earlier," confesses Lütke-Daldrup Berliner Zeitung.

“All in all, I assume that the closure will take place between the end of February and the end of March 2021. We are currently coordinating the exact date with our customers, the airlines and tenants in Terminal 5. ”The entire flight operations will then be handled in Terminal 1 for the time being. With the shutdown, FBB wants to save 25 million euros per year. Above all, the landing ban for UK planes is affecting the T5. This means that a significant part of the remaining international air traffic has disappeared. Probably one of the reasons to speed up the closure process.
