With around 230.000 visitors per season, the Nockalm Road is one of the top three excursion destinations in Carinthia - and thus one of the 15 most visited sights in all of Austria! Just in time for the start of the summer season, today, June 7, 2023, the newly designed exhibition "The Window to the Biosphere Park" was opened in the Glockenhütte on the Nockalmstraße. An absolute must for everyone who has taken the unique landscape of the Nockberge to heart.

With its 34 kilometers that wind gently through the picturesque Nockberge, the "Nock'n", the Carinthian Nockalmstraße is one of the most varied and beautiful alpine panoramic roads.

New exhibition "Window on the Biosphere Reserve" at the Glockenhütte
After a lot of work last year on the redesign of the premises in the Glockenhütte on the Nockalmstraße, which is known for the legendary wishing bell behind the hut on the Schiestlscharte, a new highlight was opened today in the presence of numerous guests: The exhibition "Das Window to the biosphere park” tells the eventful history of the region up to today's biosphere park, in which nature and people live in harmony.

From winter sports center to biosphere park
At the beginning of the exhibition, the eventful history of the once economically weak region is told, from the plans to develop the region as a winter sports center to today's biosphere reserve. On the 1st floor, the central element of the exhibition awaits visitors: an elaborately designed film about alpine farming - i.e. about the form of land use that has always characterized the image of the Nockberge, secures an income for the residents and delights the guests . In addition, an interactive elevation model provides an overview of hiking trails, mountain inns and other exhibitions along the Nockalm Road.

“For Carinthia, the Nockalm Road is one of the top tourist destinations and therefore also of great economic importance in the region. Of course, I am all the more pleased that the great importance of the biosphere reserve is also being emphasized and strengthened by the new exhibition,” says State Councilor Sara Schaar, responsible for the environment, nature conservation and parks.

Dietmar Rossmann, Head of the Nockberge Biosphere Park Administration, adds: "Of course, the Nockalm Road is a flagship for the overall high quality of the tourist offers in our country. But its importance is all the greater as it leads into the heart of the biosphere reserve and allows people to experience these unique landscapes up close. What is particularly interesting is the view that the new exhibition allows of the emergence of the biosphere reserve. The resulting realization that instead of ski slopes, a valuable habitat for flora, fauna AND people could be created is gratifying!”
