Apart from general aviation, Bolzano Airport in South Tyrol has been overslept for a long time. The discontinuation of subsidized scheduled flights in 2015, most recently operated by Darwin Airline, and the disappearance of the charters flown by AUA on behalf of tour operators, also led to a discussion about the future of the airport.

Ultimately, it was sold to a private consortium. This wants to breathe new life into the small airport. This should also be done with its own airline, which should provide connectivity with DHC Dash 8-400. Sky Alps does not have its own certificates, but has the machine operated by the Maltese Luxwings. At least in theory, because the first flight was repeatedly postponed due to the corona pandemic.

The first Sky-Alps flight should take off on May 1, 2020. The time was set before the corona pandemic and management could not foresee it. In order to avoid a financial crash landing, it was decided to postpone the start for a year. This step is absolutely understandable and is characterized by economic responsibility.

Both Roman airports are served

So it should start on May 1, 2021, but now, according to Italia Vola, Sky Alps announced that it will only start at the beginning of June 2021. The subsidiary of Bolzano Airport is therefore continuing to take a cautious path with regard to the further development of the pandemic. First of all, the connection to the capital Rome is to be established. Sky Alps wants to fly to both Fiumicino and Ciampino.

From around mid-June 2021, charter flights to Olbia, Lamezia Terme, Cagliari and Catania will follow in cooperation with organizers. At a later point in time, you also want to fly to destinations outside Italy. For example, Munich and Vienna are included in the plans, but there is still no specific date. The aim is to cooperate with major airlines in order to be able to set up real hub connections.
