Deutsche Post wants to abolish night flights within Germany

Deutsche Post no longer wants to operate domestic postal flights within Germany in the future. The volume is to be shifted mainly to the roads and in the future will be transported across Germany by trucks.

The transport of letters by rail is also expected to make a comeback at certain points. This means that some airlines, such as Eurowings, lose a significant amount of extra income because, for example, around 30 night flights are operated within Germany on behalf of the Post Office from Stuttgart, Berlin, Hanover and Munich.

The law requires that at least 80 percent of letters posted during business hours must be delivered the next day. In Germany, a reform is being prepared in this regard, which will mean that the post office will have more time in the future, meaning that recipients will have to wait longer for their letters. The postal service then wants to cut down on night flights under the guise of “climate protection” and instead transport the volume by road using trucks or, in certain cases, return to rail transport, which has been disdained for decades.
