The German commercial airports were able to handle twice as many passengers during the 12-week holiday season as in the same period of the previous year. However, it was well below the performance that could be achieved in 2019.

From June 19 to September 12, 2021, 28,6 million travelers (arrival + departure) used a German airport as a starting or destination point for their well-deserved vacation. That is an increase of 14,9 million passengers during the summer vacation period compared to 2020. Compared to the pre-crisis level of 2019, a little more than half of the passengers (52 percent) were achieved. When the ADV half-yearly balance was presented, the decrease in air traffic for the first 6 months of 2021 compared to 2019 was 86 percent. As few passengers were registered as last in 1971.

"After months of Corona restrictions, there was both hope and anticipation at the airports for the summer season," said ADV CEO Ralph Beisel. “People want to travel by air again, despite the frequently changing travel regulations that the pandemic brings with it. It is positive that the demand for travel does not decrease significantly after the end of the holiday. Based on the booking figures, it can be assumed that the current good level will continue in October. With the end of the holiday season, the demand for business travel also comes back ”.
