The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects the industry to return to profitability in 2023. However, the global surplus will not be particularly large as the cost of kerosene, personnel and services has risen sharply.

Many carriers are already in the black, but not all. For the year 2023, the IATA calculates an industry profit of 4,7 billion US dollars and thus significantly less than before the corona pandemic. In 2019, the segment posted a global gain of $26,4 billion.

In North America and Europe, many, but not all, carriers are already in the black. The situation is very different for most providers in South America and Asia. Numerous providers are still deep in the red here. According to the IATA, the recovery is likely to take even longer, especially in Asia.
