The European city on the Neisse has received a special award: Görlitz is now one of the “family-friendly holiday resorts” in Saxony. The certificate was awarded on Thursday, October 26, 2023, in the Sonnenlandpark by Tourismus Marketing Gesellschaft Sachsen mbH (TMGS), which launched the quality brand “Family vacation in Saxony”.

The brand is awarded to places as well as accommodation and leisure facilities that meet high standards for families. Since yesterday, Görlitz is one of 14 certified locations in Saxony. “We are very pleased about this recognition,” says Eva Wittig, managing director of Europastadt GörlitzZgorzelec GmbH (EGZ), which applied for the title. “Görlitz is a city with a lot of charm and history, but also with many exciting experiences for families.”

The basic requirement for an application is a certified accommodation and leisure facility in the area. For Görlitz, this has already been achieved by the Görlitz-Zgorzelec Nature Conservation Zoo and the Altstadt-Görlitz Youth Hostel. The city in Upper Lusatia also has a lot to offer: In addition to an existing child-friendly infrastructure with sports and playgrounds as well as Berzdorfer Lake and much more, numerous players contribute to ensuring that families feel comfortable here. The Senckenberg Museum of Natural History and the Zittau/Görlitz University regularly organize a children's academy, and every two years the Meetingpoint Memory Messiaen eV organizes the German-Polish KinderMiasto with many volunteers. The Görlitz Association for Families is another strong partner when it comes to family-friendliness in the city. With initiatives such as Elchstark, the children's city map and the family office as a central contact point in the city center, he has created important structures.

“The starting point for the certification was really optimal because we were able to rely on an existing infrastructure,” explains Eva Wittig and adds: “With the family-friendly services of our tourist information office, we were finally able to complete the application.”
