Hamburg Airport donated 30 trees for the meadow orchard in Niendorf as part of the "HAM helps" campaign. These are old apple varieties that have almost been forgotten. These are now to be planted in a park.

"If everything grows well, the first fruit could fall from the trees in three years," says Ingo Fehr from Hamburg Airport's environmental department. “But not only the local residents should benefit from the planting campaign. Meadow orchards are also considered to be particularly valuable sources of food for animals such as birds, bees, hornets and other insects. At the same time, we can make an important contribution to biodiversity.” The insect hotel, an artificially created nesting and wintering aid, especially for wild bees, which are indispensable in nature, also serves this purpose. An information board provides details. Around half of the 585 wild bee species in Germany are on the Red List of endangered species. 40 species are already extinct, another 100 are threatened with extinction. Hamburg Airport had previously received a UN award for its commitment to protecting wild bees on its own premises.
